Dome of the Rock

Dome of the Rock. Temple Mount, Jerusalem, Israel. April 4, 2010. // While visiting Israel with my grandmother, we were allowed to proceed through security into the Temple Mount area of Old Jerusalem. This photograph was taken of the Dome of the Rock, which was built on the Temple Mount (691-92 CE). This particular site is full of religious significance for multiple religions and is therefore the cause of much tension. According to Muslim tradition, the Dome of the Rock contains the rock where the prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. According to Jewish tradition, this is the rock where Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son, Isaac. When we visited the Temple Mount, our Jewish guide was not allowed to accompany us through security to the Temple Mount area, because of this tension. From my research on the Dome of the Rock, it appears as though there are multiple theories regarding the original purpose of the structure.
